Grading

Science

I think that for the science part of this project, I deserve an A- or B+. I ordered the plant, brought in the correct type of light, and I also feel like I did most of the research on our plant.

I think that if I planted my plant and maybe even included an extra organism it would be better. Only problem is, my parents wouldn't let me keep the extra organism.

Humanities

I think that I should have a B for the humanities part of this project. I think this because a model of what the mud hut should look like but, didn't put in the distinctive characteristics of a mud hut (grass roof) and didn't really put an Medieval African feel to it.

I think that I could of improved this by putting an opening in my hut, grass roof, and find an actual African Building and be able to put it in my terrarium (like Luis's Church of our Lady of Zion).

Exhibition

Last night was Exhibition. I think that it went well but, most people walking by had an "It's a plant" attitude. And what I mean by that is they weren't very interested in our display.

I don't have much to say mostly because nothing really "amazing" or "exciting" happened.

Sketching

Today, I mainly worked on sketching the scientific drawing on my plant. I have it finished but, I think I'm going to need to color it in. Tonight, I plan on getting both of the drawings done and be finished or close to finishing the writing for why plants are important to the world. I also plan to use ribbon to tie it all together.

The Book

Since I'm doing the scientific drawing and life cycle of my organism I asked myself," How hard is it going to be to hold on to loose papers?". I decided it would be easier if I made a 5 paged paper book that included my scientific drawing, life cycle, why carnivorous plants are important to the word, and some brief information about my plant. I'm excited about doing making and hope I get a good grade.

Oh No!

Today, I came across a problem. When I was on the Internet I couldn't find any scientific drawings of a carnivorous plant. Kevin Z.Z. (a person in my group) also couldn't find a scientific drawing. When I addressed our problem to Mr.Davis he said for us to label the things we knew the name for. I guess that's what I'll have to do.

Ordering

Today, Mr.Strong and Mr.Davis told us the extra 5 assignments that we could choose from. We can only choose 1 and once we had decided which one we wanted to do we were told to go to certain places for that certain assignment. I decided to do the assignment that the requirements are to make a scientific drawing an a life cycle of your organism. It sounds pretty easy and simple enough that I can get it done in a day (if something were to happen to the original piece of paper).

Today, we also ordered our plant. Our plant (Rounded Leaf Sundew) looked very similar to the Pink Sundew that Carli A. and Alex D. already have. So, we decided to change our plant to the Lance-Leafed Sundew. Our new plant is still in the Sundew family and can get a pink/red coloring to it. The only thing that makes our new plant different than our old plant is the shape of the leaves. The Lance Leaf Sundew has very triangular leaves. And, to the left of this paragraph is a picture of our new plant.

Putting it all together

Today, I started to finish up my panel. I'm using safari animal-print tissue paper for cool accents and to give my panel a wild background. I'm also using funky fonts such as Jokerman in M.W. to draw attention to my panel. I don't want to give it all away but, once I get it done there will be a picture of it at the bottom of the page.

Materials

Today, I got a computer, but the internet was down. So I didn't get the chance to research things about my civilization at school. Instead, I wrote down things that I needed to do when I got home and tips on what I should search to find my information that I didn't get to find at school.

After school was out, my mom drove me over to Michaels so we can get the materials for this project. I found everything that I wanted and some cool pop-up animal stickers.

When I got home I got pictures off the internet that I would want to use in my interpretive panel. I also did more research and typed up the fun facts that I was going to put on my panel. So far, everything is going well but I do feel I need to work a little harder searching for a computer.

Interpretive Panel

Today, I started to organize what I'm going to do for my interpretive panel. My interpretive panel is about my civilization. When I'm done with my interpretive panel, I'll take a picture of it and post it on my site so everything makes more sense.

While I was organizing the things I'm going to need for my interpretive panel, I found some fun facts about Africa. The fun facts will go to good use in my interpretive panel along with other things I plan to put in it. One of the other things I plan to do to my interpretive panel, is to have African themed music playing in the background so the people walking by will not only be able to see my panel but, to also hear it.

Zoo

Today, we went to the zoo. My mom was a chaperone and a driver. When we drove there and back Matt, Hunter, Danielle Levin and I all had a blast listening to 91.1 fm and talking. When we arrived at the zoo, there was almost nobody there! I think that it was my driving group and another driving group and that was all. So when the teachers and eveyone else arrived Mr.Davis and Mr.Strong told us what to do.

The Carnivorous Plants a.k.a. The Sexy Beasts went to the Elephant Mesa and checked out the exhibits. My partner forgot the hand-out over by the area where our lunches are so we couldn't write anything down while the rest of the group could.

As we were walking over to the sky-ride, my mom let me go ahead and run to our lunches so I could get the piece of paper and write on it while I wait for them to meet me at the sky-ride. I did get it finished but, didn't have much help from my partner.

While we were taking the sky-ride over to the polar bear exhibit, the cool breeze was very refreshing. Considering it was a very hot day at the zoo.

After we looked at a couple of exhibits (pandas, polar bears etc.) it was time for lunch. After lunch, Mr.Strong, Mr.Davis and the Sexy Beasts all walked over to the monkey trails that featured a carnivorous plant exhibit. After we looked at the monkies and plants, we then walked over to the reptile house. Everyone was looking at the Komodo Dragon and I think the the Komodo Dragon was looking at Kevin.

After we were done with the Zoo, my mom drove me and my driving group back to school. On the way back, we all got a Jamba Juice. Except for Hunter, who had a pink bunny face paint.

Insead of going back to school, my mom drove me home so we could both take an awesome nap!

Yeah!

Today, we got our terrarium! Destiny brought it in along with crickets. I'm not sure if they will eat them but, if they don't, we can give them to the Amphibian and Reptile group. But, what we do know is that they will eat wingless fruit flies from either Petco or Petsmart. Now, all we have to do is wait for our plant! Once we get out plant, we will put it in it's Bog-like environment. The bog -like environment will have rocks at the bottom, a layer of thin dirt and then the soil. The soil won't be fertilizer because it will the plant. Carley A. had already bought some soil that would be perfect for our carnivorous plants!

Put off

Unfortunately, yesterday, our play got put off until today. After we were done with the skit, we then all went to the conference room. Once we were there, my partner walked in with the incorrect website. So, I got her on the right one and wrote down their mailing address. I (with the help of my partner) did some research on the customs of Africa. The research will then be used in a presentation that will not only include African customs but also African architecture, geography and 2 other things that I forgot about.

Our Plant
Our plant (just in case you forgot) is the Round-leaf Sun Dew plant and can be found at one of links below this paragraph. Our plant will cost $8 and will eat wingless flies. Unlike most plats, our plant needs salt water or water that has been sitting our for 3 days. Regular tap water might possibly kill our Round-leaf Sun Dew.

Lets Sing A Song About Carnivorous Plants

Today, we practiced our Steve Irwin skit. I tried to help come up with lyrics for the song but for some reason they weren't favored. It doesn't bother me because I don't think that I was taking it that seriously. The rest of the group wasn't taking it all that seriously either.

The night before our skit was going to happen, Kevin felt like being awesome and wrote the entire script up for us. I was so grateful because we really couldn't agree on one thing for our skit.

Welcome to my blog!

My name is Cheyenne and I'm in the 7th grade on the Strong/Davis team. We have done a lot of projects this year but, for some reason the Zoomanities project gets a blog. In this blog, I will be writing about what I did that day. For example, today (April 23, 2007), my partner and I combined our field notes and sent it to Mr.Davis. We also then printed it out for a hard copy.

Let me catch you up on some of things that have already happened:
Prior to today, within our group of 10, were then divided in to 5 groups of 2. The person that we were paired up with is considered our partner. As I mentioned in this post, my partner is Destiny. We have also decided what carnivorous plant we want to take care of, the Round-leafed Sun dew Plant.
